Álvaro Fontes to secure title in Barcelona
The Málaga-born driver approaches a career defining moment at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Fontes can claim SEAT León Trophy, Clase 1 and D1 titles in the Spanish Endurance Championship. Fontes will have a new teammate when the series get under way in Barcelona as Mikel Azcona will share the PCR Sport SEAT with him.
Álvaro Fontes hopes to raise his profile in motorsport next weekend. His faultless season will come to an end at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Spaniard Fontes can claim three drivers´ titles in the Spanish Endurance Championship: the SEAT León Trophy, the Clase 1 and the D1.
The main racing series in Spain visit Barcelona for the season finale and Fontes sits first in overall (Clase 1 and D1), on 268 points, and class driver standings, on 102 points. The Spanish racer is the sole points leader and, to secure the title, another seasoned driver – after Mirco van Oostrum and Jordi Oriola- will join him at the wheel of the SEAT León Cup Racer entered by PCR Sport. Touring car ace Mikel Azcona will team up with Fontes at Montmeló-based race track. Although Azkona is extremely young, he is an experienced racing driver.
“Finally we approach the defining moment of the season and our goal is to proclaim myself champion. Besides, I can confirm Mikel becomes my new teammate for the season closer. He is an official PCR Sport driver and the right choice for the challenge ahead of us”, Fontes explains. In addition, he remarks: “I am looking forward to racing in Barcelona, because I really enjoy the FIM Grand Prix layout we will use this time. I know this layout from my first steps as a racing driver. I think it is even more exciting. Our chances are reasonably good, so our target is a trouble-free race.”
Unlike previous meetings, just a single 120-minute race will be held instead of two consisting of 50 minutes each. Race will take place on Sunday at 12.20.
