Canamasas makes remarkable recovery to finish 12th
Team Lazarus driver dropped several places due to starting on the dirty side of the grid. Despite extreme tire wear – as a result of temperatures and abrasive asphalt at the Sakhir International Circuit-, Canamasas took the checkered flag 12th in line.
Sergio Canamasas almost was able to turn weekend around for points score in Bahrain. The only Spaniard in the series couldn´t improve 16th-fastest in qualifying as his car set-up was less than ideal at the end of the session. At the start, Team Lazarus driver struggled on the dirty side of the grid and was overtaken by four cars. But, after four laps, Canamasas had already moved up to 16th, still gaining some places before pitting on lap 16. During the second half of the race, Canamasas couldn’t take advantage of new tires as he has closely-fought battles with other cars but still finished 12th.
“Of course, the key moment was race start. I often make good starts but today was impossible and, in fact, I dropped to 20th. Although I managed to move through the field, I also lost time”, Canamasas said shortly after the race. Canamasas stressed “tire wear was too extreme, as a result of abrasive asphalt. My front left tire was almost destroyed by the end of the race. To be honest, I expected to be more competitive and the lack of pace was a bit frustrating but I still managed to came 12th. We will have another shot tomorrow, and starting 12th should be easier to reach top-8.”
Sprint race will take place tomorrow at 08.45 (CET).
