Engine failure prevents race drive but Perel shows promise on Ferrari debut at Monza

While David Perel came away from the biggest weekend in his racing career clearly disappointed after his Kessel Ferrari 458 GT3 broke its engine before his stint on his the Blancpain GT Endurance Championship debut at Monza, the Cape Town driver was buoyed by his performances leading up to the race.

“Unfortunately we were out before I got to drive,” David rued Sunday afternoon. “We suffered a blown engine 55 minutes into the 3-hour race — it was a sad way to end the weekend.”

“I am however more than happy with how the rest of the weekend went,” David admitted. “It was quite special to see my name next to legends I’ve been watching and reading about for years and quite bizarre to share the track with them! “Practice was difficult with rain, accidents and traffic but we were competitive and our long run pace was looking good.

“Then I qualified third in class and 30th overall and 0.9 seconds off pole position overall and the race was looking good until the car stopped. “Such a pity, but that’s motor racing…

I have to say a huge word of thanks to everyone who has supported me, here and at home — that all means a huge amount to me,” David concluded. “Hopefully we can make up for it at Silverstone in May…”
