Canamasas places ninth in Sunday´s race
Difficult Sunday on the Silverstone circuit where the Barcelona-born pilot´s speed was on full display and had three-way battles with several drivers. Canamasas, struggling on slick worn tires, managed to overtake several cars when rain came down at the end of the race.
Sergio Canamasas finished the GP2 Series´ sprint race at Silverstone in ninth place. Spain´s driver experienced one of the toughest and most challenging races so far but still showed his potential. From 13th on the grid, Canamasas moved up to tenth after lap one in which was another great start at the wheel of his Carlin-entered Dallara GP2/11. A particular eye-catcher was his closely-fought battle with drivers such as Pierre Gasly, Nicholas Latifi and Artem Markelov. When drivers appeared to be struggling with tire wear, Canamasas passed Markelov on the outside. The rain appeared two laps from the end and with extremely low grip conditions, Canamasas still gained several places to finish 9th, one spot out of the points.
“Following set-up changes after race one, the car worked way better and it was much more competitive. I made a good start and the first laps were quite funny battling with drivers such as Markelov or Gasly. Maybe I could have been more aggressive at the beginning, but at the same time it was important to save tires until the end”, Canamasas explained. He added that “the last few laps were absolutely crazy. I made a move on Evans, among others. I had a moment on the approach to Turn 15 entering sideways. At the end, I was behind my teammate Marvin and I decided not to take risks. Otherwise, I would have tried to take 8th place”.
The GP2 Series will head to Hungary in two weeks´ time.
