An unlucky ending for Sergio Canamasas in Abu Dhabi
Carlin driver hadn´t Lady Luck on his side in sprint race held at Yas Marina Circuit on Sunday. Canamasas was struggling with lacking pace and he dropped several places when Daniel de Jong, stopped on the track after making contact with another rival, blocked him on lap one.
The end of 2016 GP2 season was worse than expected for Sergio Canamasas at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Canamasas was determined to shine at season finale but finally race incidents and car lacking pace frustrated his goal. At the wheel of his Carlin-entered Dallara GP2/11, Canamasas started 12th from the dirty side of the grid on Sunday. So, when the lights went out couldn´t prevent several cars from overtaking him. As if this were not enough, the Barcelona-born driver was forced to brake to avoid Daniel de Jong´s car ahead, whici spun as a result of a collision with Luca Ghiotto, still on lap one. Canamasas dropped to the back of the field but still gained several places to classify 16th at the checkered flag.
“It is quite different to what I was expecting in Abu Dhabi. Sincerely I thought it would be different. Starting on the dirty side, I struggled when the lights went out. Unfortunately, then I lost still more places when I need to slow down to avoid de Jong. Then, I managed to overtake several cars but I couldn´t find a good race trim as our set-up didn´t work out for us in hot temperature conditions”, Canamasas explained. He added that “as always, I gave 100% today, but it wasn´t enough to get a good result. Our season came to an end with a 16th place, which is a poor result. There were a few highlights in a mixed year, but not as many as I would like. Now I´m already focused on 2017”.
