South Africa’s Jonathan Aberdein is within a few points of taking the Formula 4 United Arab Emirates title following another forceful weekend at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit, where he netted a couple of wins in spite of two of the four races starting off reversed grids and being taken out of the second race lead after being tagged by his teammate in the last lap. Aberdein however saw to it that his Motopark team wrapped up the team title on Saturday.

“I just missed out on the title thanks to a teammate-induced spin in the third last corner of race 2,” Jonathan, who had to beat the same teammate in all four of the races on the weekend to take the title, admitted. “But otherwise a good weekend and now I’m hoping to finish it off in Race 1 of the last round.

Jonathan started the weekend on his customary on pole position before storming to the first race win. The second race was off a reversed grid and Jono started 10th before moving up to third and before that last lap incident, which saw him drop back to 7th, once again with the fastest lap.

“I was on pole for the third race, but I lost the lead,” Jonathan explained “But I came back quickly and went on to win by almost 4 seconds – I was very happy with that.” The fourth race was another reverse grid, Jono started 10th and finished second. “One more lap and I would have won it, but I set the fastest lap again.

“That was a Great weekend, big thanks to Timo and the Motopark boys who did an exceptional job as always and congratulations to the team on the championship,” Aberdein concluded. “We go into the final event in a few weeks time with a massive points lead and then it’s time to prepare for the ADAC German Formula 4 series – I think we will be ready for that!”
