The 2017 Mopar South African Endurance Championship and the SA GT Challenge got uner way this morning as first Simon Murray took his Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 to GT Sprint race victory, before former Ligier teammate stormed to pole position in the Mopar Goldfields 6 Hour Pole Shootout.

The day started with Murray passing pole man Craig Jarvis’s Ferrari in the first corner of the GT Sprint before the two became involved in a cat and mouse game up front until the Ferrari developed a misfire to allow the Murray to go on to win from the misfiring Jarvis.

A little further back, Jonathan Schenkman made it a Lamborghini double as he brought his Gallardo home third overall to take the Challenge class, three seconds clear of Porsche duo Andrew Culbert and Sun Moodley, Giacomo Giannoccoro’s Ferrari and Werner Link’s Porsche, while birthday boy Harry Aranges took GT4 honours in his Mustang.

The GT Sprint was followed by the Goldfields 6 Hour pole shootout, where Adcock put the Harp Motorsport Malta #1 Juno on pole for the big race after the new Aquila he was due to share with Francis Curruthers and Johan Engelbrecht developed electrical issues and the team opted to go with the old faithful Juno.

They will start ahead of the Craig Jarvis/Marcel Angel Viper, with Charl and Harry Aranges third on the grid in their Ferrari 360 Challenge, Mick McLachlan and Tony Martin’s Backdraft Cobra next up ahead of Dean Venter’s giant-killing Nash and Doug McDonald’s Shelby-Nissan.

Racing starts at 13h00 – follow it live on www.motorsportmedia.co.za.
