Investchem Formula 1600 – Four out of four for van der Watt

Cape Town driver Julian van der Watt continued to exercise an iron grip on the 2017 Investchem South African Formula 1600 championship with another dominant victory at Kyalami on Saturday following a similar performance at the Cape Town season opener a month ago.

“That was another perfect weekend,” Julian reported after the race. “We have prepared hard and Kyalami is just reward to the whole team and I really have to thank my dad, Claudio Piazza Musso of Race Driver SA, Ian Schofield of Investchem and everyone else for their contributions to make this happen.

Van der Watt, who recently added the outright Phakisa lap record to his Kyalami mark last aboard an A1 GP car last week, now also holds the Formula 1600 lap record at Kyalami and Killarney. “It’s been a record year and I am keen to go all the way to make 2017 a year to remember,” the 2015 and 2016 Formula 1600 series runner-up warned.”

The next Formula 1600 race is in East London 18 May, but Julian now turns his attention to the second round of the ultra-competitive SA DD2 Karting Championship at his Killarney home track this coming weekend, where he hopes to repeat his dominant performance in the same races last year.

“DD2 is probably the most competitive class in SA racing this year with SA Rally and Cross Country champion Leeroy Poulter, SA GTC champion Michael Stephen, Bradley Liebenberg and my home rival Umpie Swart among a very powerful grid, so it would be great to beat them all, even though that will not be easy. “Bring it on!”
