Canamasas scores points in the streets of Monte Carlo

Spaniard Canamasas left Monaco with points paying position but it resulted to be a bittersweet weekend as he had much higher expectations after his second place in free practice. Traffic ruined his best laps in qualifying and racing incidents prevented from podium fight later in races.

Sergio Canamasas experienced a troubled weekend in the Principality of Monaco where the Round 3 of the FIA Formula 2 Championship took place. The driver of Trident, who secured several podium finishes in past seasons, made a nice start to the event with his second place on Thursday’s free practice session. However, despite he topped the timesheets on his first set of tires, he struggled with slower cars on his second set and failed to equal his result from the morning. Therefore he lined up 15th on the grid.

In race 1, another driver hit Canamasas at the beginning and he was forced to make an early pit stop but still moved through the field to run 10th. In race 2, which was held on Saturday, he passed Antonio Fuoco on lap eight but then, twenty laps later, a clash with Oliver Rowland forced him to pit for a new nose. Finally, he brought 17th place home.

“We faced a troublesome weekend despite our potential was quite good. I posted 2nd-fastest in free practice session. Besides, I clocked my best lap time at the beginning, and track conditions improved later, so I could have finished on top. Traffic ruined my two attempts and it dashed out chances for all the weekend. On Friday’s race, a clash with Boschung forced me to make an early pit stop, but I managed to put in a recovery drive to finish tenth”, Canamasas explained, underling that “scoring our first points of the season was positive. But starting from the back of the grid, we couldn’t expect any better. We just didn’t get lucky, despite I worked a lot to achieve something very different. We need to keep working for the future.”
