FRENCH F4 CHAMPIONSHIP 2017 – Arthur Rougier clinches a stunning victory!
Sunday began with the second race for the young drivers entered for the French F4 Championship. After the first heat that had been fairly calm with no collisions race 2 was a more hectic affair. All the drivers lined up on the grid in a more confident state of mind than the previous day and the positions kept on changing throughout the 20-minute race.
Arthur Rougier, who was very much at ease on the Belgian circuit, made a fantastic comeback as he started in 10th position and picked off the front-runners one by one to take first place. Victor Martins did the same overtaking the cars in front of him to snatch second spot on the podium.
Florian Venturi was also back on the podium with a third-place finish after a well-driven race from start to finish. Pierre-Alexandre Jean saw the flag in fourth spot after his top-3 finish yesterday in race 1. Javier Gonzalez from Mexico completed the first five after making a good start to the meeting.
Casper Røes and Hugo Chevalier who were in third and fourth places on the grid fell back to sixth and seventh at the flag. They still have another race to hope to see the chequered flag at the front of the field. Ugo de Wilde who was 12th at the start scored his first point in this race on home turf and has every reason to be happy with this result, his best of the season so far.
Aldo Festante and Antoine Horemans took advantage of the retirements of other drivers and finished just shy of the points in ninth and tenth positions. After a cautious drive yesterday in race 1 Antoine Horemans seemed to have boosted his confidence in the second heat, which bodes well for race 3. Amaury Cordeel came home last but everything is not lost for the Belgian driver with one race remaining in the late afternoon.
With just a few minutes to go to the flag when the field had bunched up after the deployment of the safety car following a minor collision at La Source between Thomas Drouet and Christian Muñoz who were battling for sixth place, Jean-Baptiste Mela was unable to avoid tagging Stuart White. Marvin Klein spent a long time in the top 10, but had to retire shortly before the end of the race.
