Canamasas continues run of points-scoring finishes in Baku

Spaniard Canamasas completed another weekend in the points in the FIA Formula 2 Championship. Despite his 9th place, Canamasas wasn’t completely satisfied as lack of pace in his Trident-entered Dallara prevented him from fighting for more valuables points on Sunday

Sergio Canamasas collected points for Trident in the FIA Formula 2 Championship’s round 4 at Baku City Circuit. The F1 feeder series headed into Azerbaijan for another exciting double-header and Canamasas was looking for another strong result as he already delivered a brilliant performance in the street circuit last year. Friday’s red-flag and virtual safety cars interrupted session limited the overall number of laps and things weren’t going according to plan for Canamasas but he managed to take advantage of his large experience to shine in qualifying by clocking 8th-fastest time with a personal best lap of 1:53.354.

In race 1, which took place on Saturday morning, Canamasas climbed up the order and moved up to sixth fighting with Antonio Fuoco. Following a safety car period and after starting on the soft tire, Canamasas pitted for his set of medium tires on lap 6. From then on, the driver of Trident was in contention for a top-8 finish but a red flag brought the race to a premature end. The driver classified in 8th place didn’t make his mandatory pit stop as a result but he didn’t hand a time penalty. So, Canamasas finished 9th. On Sunday, Canamasas was in points contention again but his Trident’s car pace dropped away and lost several places in the dying moments of the race. “As always, scoring points is an excellent new but we were expecting something else on the track. We failed to finish in 8th place and subsequently start from pole position on Sunday as the driver classified in 8th didn’t make his mandatory pit stop due to red flag. This said and to be honest, we didn’t have enough race pace to defend first place on Sunday”, Canamasas said.
