During a routine test run at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Wednesday, September 6, FIA World Touring Car Championship leader Tiago Monteiro was involved in an incident at high speed at Turn 1.

Tiago was extracted from the car and – following an assessment at the circuit Medical Centre – was taken, fully conscious and without any broken bones, to a local hospital, where he remains under observation.

An MRI scan, conducted today (Friday, September 8), detected no injuries, but as a precaution he has been advised to remain in hospital for the weekend to begin his recuperation.

He will be re-assessed on Monday, after which a transfer to a facility in Portugal will be discussed.

We would like to wish Tiago a speedy recovery and are confident of his return to full fitness in time to resume his battle for the FIA WTCC title at the next round in China on October 14-15.

Along with Tiago and his family, we wish to extend our sincerest thanks to the extraction and medical teams at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and the staff at the hospital, who are providing the best possible care.

An update on his condition will be issued in due course.
