ADAC German Formula 4 – Jonathan second in his final Formula 4 race
South African racer Jonathan Aberdein said goodbye to the ADAC German Formula 4 championship in style, when he delivered a fine second position in Saturday’s second race at Hockenheim. Aberdein, who has spent the past two seasons in Formula 4, winning the 2017 Formula 4 UAE title before concentrating on his second season in the German series, was happy to finish off on a high note.
It’s been a tough year, but it was good to end the championship off with a strong result,” Jonathan admitted. “The second race was the highlight of the weekend — I was second throughout and fought Lirim Zendeli for the lead earlier on, but my tyres went off a bit and I lost ground, which allowed Sophia Flörsch to close up. “I managed to keep ahead to end up second and happy to give the team a podium on my Formula 4 swansong.
“I was very happy to qualify third, but the first race was marred by a technical glitch with the start lights and I was caught out behind pole man Drugovich and dropped down the field before the car suffered a wheel bearing failure and I was out. “Race 2 was great — I started third and ended second and the final started well — I was 20th on the grid and made it up to 11th, but I had to pit to change my front wing and ended up well down.
“We have had a great time in Formula 4 — I have learned so much, we have been quick and had some good results, even if we had our fair share of bad luck. “Thanks to Motopark Racing for all the Formula 4 opportunities, but now its time to move on.” Aberdein will confirm his 2018 racing plans in due course.
