Daniel Juncadella gives his backing to #R-Motorsport for the team’s first DTM season with the Aston Martin Vantage DTM car
R-Motorsport are continuing with preparations for their debut season with Aston Martin in the DTM and have taken on another driver with DTM experience, Daniel Juncadella. The 27-year-old Spaniard from Barcelona can look back on five seasons and 76 races in the DTM. Along with 2010 DTM champion Paul Di Resta, Daniel Juncadella is the second driver in the squad, who has already competed in the DTM.
“With my experience, I would like to support R-Motorsport in the development of the Aston Martin Vantage DTM car so that it can become a match for the opposition in the extremely tough competitive environment of the DTM as quickly as possible,” said Daniel Juncadella. “We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us to bring that about, but I’m confident that we’ll soon be able to achieve notable success with our ambitious, young team.”
Daniel lined up in the DTM with Mercedes-AMG from 2013 to 2018. Last season, 2018, was his most successful season to date. He took three pole positions and two podiums and also secured his maiden win in the DTM at Brands Hatch, the famous circuit in the south of England.
Before switching to the DTM, the motor racing all-round talent won the prestigious Formula 3 Grand Prix on the Guia street circuit at Macau in 2011. The following year, he became FIA Formula 3 European champion and won the Formula 3 Euro Series championship and the Formula 3 Masters at Zandvoort. He returned to single-seater racing as a test and reserve driver for HWA RACELAB in the ABB FIA Formula E championship towards the end of 2018.
“Daniel is a very reliable top driver and well-known in the DTM,” said Team Principal Dr Florian Kamelger. “We’re counting on his many years of experience to help us gradually work our way up with the Aston Martin Vantage DTM car to be as good as the top cars of our fellow competitors in a strong field. Daniel and Paul Di Resta are both very experienced and have a good understanding of exactly what is required to ensure that we make rapid progress with the development of our technical package.”
R-Motorsport will line up under its exclusive licence with Aston Martin to commence its first season with the Aston Martin Vantage DTM car at Hockenheim where the first two DTM races of the year will be staged on the weekend of 4th/5th May. These race outings will be operated by Vynamic which is a joint venture between AF Racing AG and HWA AG.
