A first match point for Comtoyou Racing in the TCR Europe
The penultimate round of the TCR Europe is scheduled for this weekend at Monza
Comtoyou Racing dominates the Teams’ championship, as Franco Girolami and Tom Coronel aim for a one-two in the Drivers’ competition Viktor Davidovski leads in the Diamond Trophy, and Marco Butti is already Rookie champion Jessica Bäckmann chooses Comtoyou Racing to aim for the TCR Germany crown
Over the seasons, Comtoyou Racing has become a true reference in touring car racing. Since Mehdi Benanni’s title in the TCR Europe in 2020 and Nicolas Baert’s crown in the Juniors the same year, the Belgian team has confirmed its undeniable rise to power. As partner of Audi Sport in the World Touring Car Cup, the Belgian structure has indeed won the honorary titles of runner-up in the Teams’ and Drivers’ championships (with Frédéric Vervisch) in the FIA WTCR 2021.
Even though it is not yet finished, the 2022 season should also be a great vintage for the team managed by Jean-Michel Baert and François Verbist. Already this weekend, at the penultimate TCR Europe meeting at the legendary Autodromo di Monza, Comtoyou Racing could be celebrating new titles with its Audi RS 3 LMS
“There is no question of making plans,” insists Jean-Michel Baert, the Team Principal. “It is true that our Argentinean driver Franco Girolami is well ahead in the provisional ranking. He could already be crowned on Sunday if he scores 18 points more than his closest rival, Josh Files, the 2019 champion. But we are going to approach this Monza event as we did all the others throughout the year: by remaining focused on what we have to do and by keeping a cool head. In motorsport, things can change very quickly.”
Comtoyou Racing has two trump cards up its sleeve. Despite his absence from the Norisring due to a clash in the calendar with the FIA WTCR, Tom Coronel is third in the championship, only 13 points behind Josh Files. “It is obvious that a possible one-two would not be unpleasant for us,” smiles François Verbist, Team Manager. “Tom competes with us in both TCR Europe and FIA WTCR. He is in Olympic form at the moment, as proved by his victory at the Nürburgring in the last race.”
With the Macedonian Viktor Davidovski in 6th place in the European championship and leader of the Diamond Trophy (for drivers over 40 years old) and the 17-year-old Italian Marco Butti already champion among the Rookies, Comtoyou Racing is experiencing one of the best seasons in its history.
The team’s appeal is also evident in the national competitions. This weekend Comtoyou Racing will also be represented in the ADAC TCR Germany at the Sachsenring. Currently second in the German championship, Swedish driver Jessica Bäckmann has chosen the Belgian structure and the Audi RS 3 LMS for the last two races of the season. “We know Jessica well, having competed with her regularly in TCR Europe, and we are delighted to have her join the Comtoyou family,” said François Verbist. “We are going to do everything we can to help her fight for the crown!”
For Comtoyou Racing, the autumn promises to be particularly exciting! “In addition to TCR Europe and TCR Germany, we are continuing our commitment to FIA WTCR,” confirms Jean-Michel Baert. “In this competition, where we officially represent Audi Sport, we have also demonstrated that we are competitive. The calendar for the end of the season has been changed, and this has required some fine logistical juggling, but we will be aiming for the final podium in both the Teams’ and the Drivers’ championships at the last two meetings, in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. In addition, we will be taking part in the FIA Motorsports Games at the end of October at the Circuit Paul Ricard. So it will be an intense period, but that is the kind of challenge we love to take on!”
