Hungaroring – FIA Formula 2 Race 2 Report Prema – Vesti claims P2 in Feature Race, extends championship lead
Frederik Vesti maximized his performance today in the Hungaroring Feature Race, handing PREMA Racing a positive podium finish. The Dane started third on the grid and made a brilliant outside move for P2 in turn 1. He then controlled the position throughout the day, switching from option to prime tyres relatively late and finishing just in front of his closest pursuer.
Coming from a podium finish in the Sprint Race, Ollie Bearman ended up in P12. The British racer had the reverse strategy compared to his teammate, starting with primes and then moving to options. The strategy ended up not being the most favorable one, and he found himself struggling with options in the closing stages against contenders in much better rubber conditions.
While Vesti was able to increase his lead in the Driver Championship over the weekend, PREMA Racing is now tied for P1 in the Team Championship as FIA F2 heads towards Spa-Francorchamps.
#7 FREDERIK VESTI
“Coming back like this was what we needed to show after losing the points at Silverstone which hurt quite a bit. I knew it was worth taking the risk on the outside of the first corner because it’s hard to overtake here and also difficult to maintain the tyres when you’re following. My start was quite good and I feel lucky when I exited the corner because there was a light touch and I was not really sure if I had damage. I was looking to manage my tyres knowing that Doohan was probably doing the same out front. We didn’t want to box first, but I was actually quite surprised by how far we could extend the options. I can’t believe there are only four rounds left in the championship, it has flown by, but it’s extremely important now to continue to fight and find that performance in qualy and in the races.”
#8 OLLIE BEARMAN
“Tough day today, we didn’t really have the pace on the primes, which kind of made our race a long one. We also didn’t expect that the options would last so long, so already the prime-option strategy wasn’t going to work. We need to regroup to come back for Spa, looking forward to that one.”
