GT Cup Championship – Four-star Beechdean AMR dominate on Silverstone GT Cup return
Beechdean AMR were utterly dominant on their GT Cup Championship return as the High Wycombe team won the GT3 category in all four races at Silverstone last weekend.
The multiple British GT Championship-winning squad brought a single Aston Martin Vantage GT3 to be driven by Team Principal Andrew Howard and Aston Martin works driver Darren Turner and left with every piece of silverware available.
Treating the event as a test exercise after failing to complete a British GT racing lap since May, Andrew set the tone for the weekend by taking GT3 pole position on Saturday morning and converting it to a class win in the opening 25-minute Sprint Race.
That was not without its dramas though as the two-time British GT title winner and 2016 European Le Mans Series champion spun near the end of the opening lap and spent the rest of the race recovering from 11th to second overall, which was also the GT3 victory.
He and Darren then added a second victory in the same day’s 50-minute Pitstop Race; multiple Le Mans winner Darren setting the fastest lap as he took over the car from Andrew during the mandatory driver changes.
Sunday was less dramatic with no heroic fightbacks needed. Instead Andrew and Darren dominated the Pitstop Race before, running the final Sprint Race solo, Andrew triumphed and netted the Driver of the Day Award in recognition of his performances.
Andrew Howard, Driver/Team Principal, said: “I’m really pleased with the way the weekend went. The GT Cup is a great championship and everyone was very welcoming. Having missed a bit of racing recently it was important that we ran in the GT3 class and a real bonus to have our first fully dry weekend of the year. Racing with DT [Darren Turner] again has been great. We’ve done a lot together in the past so it was a very easy transition for the weekend. Thanks to everyone at the GT Cup; I hope we can join again with other GT3s in the future.”
