Rival takes out Canamasas on first lap

Today´s GP2 Series Feature race lasted less than a lap for Canamasas at the Sochi Autodrom, as the Spaniard driver was hit by another car caught up in a pile up on the opening lap.

Sergio Canamasas was forced to retire from race 1 at Sochi Autodrom over the course of the first lap. Starting from the back of the grid after problematic qualifying session – Canamasas´ car hit gearbox issues and set-up at the Dallara didn´t quite work out in wet conditions-, the only Spanish racer in the series couldn´t complete a single lap. Canamasas was involved in a pile up when Markelov ran wide and, rejoining the track, he collected Marlon Stockinger in front of Canamasas. The Barcelona-born driver was pushed by another rival and couldn´t avoid collision.

“Lady Luck is not smiling on us at Sochi racetrack. I was forced to retire while running in second place last year due to mechanical problems and today an unfortunate crash prevented me to complete a single lap. Someone else hit my car on some stupid maneuver and I couldn´t avoid collision with Markelov and Stockinger”, Canamasas clearly annoyed said. But his maverick spirit eyes “recovery tomorrow”.

Sunday´s Sprint race is due to start at 09.05 (CET).
