Canamasas shines with strong recovery on Sunday
Despite today´s physical problems for Canamasas as a result of his crash yesterday, Team Lazarus driver put on a good recovery drive from the back of the grid to finish 14th in GP2´s sprint race at the Sochi Autodrom.
Race two finished in a positive 14th position in the twenty-four car field for Sergio Canamasas during Sunday´s GP2 race in Sochi. Yesterday Canamasas was involved in a multi-car pile-up during weekend´s feature race and would have to start back in the field.
On the opening lap, Canamasas managed to gain ten places to move up to 13th and avoided another race incident, which brought out the safety car. At the restart, the Spanish racer came under attack by Mitch Evans, with both drivers fighting head-to-head several corners. Despite Team Lazarus driver lost two places, soon he managed to pass Nicholas Latifi on lap 12. Canamasas was experiencing painful tension of the neck musculature and Jordan King became another emerging threat behind. The Briton overtook Canamasas after clashing. But, at the end, Canamasas found some strength and went through to finish 14th.
“For sure it was one of the most challenging races for me. From early morning I was experiencing neck pain, mainly at T3. Besides, I had finger pain as well. On the first lap I passed many cars and later I have had some close battles with rivals but, as always, some drivers have a different sense of fair play”, Canamasas explained, as “King hit me hard. Anyway I managed to pass him at the end. Taking into account my race came to a very early end yesterday, and my mileage was shorter in comparison to the rest of the field, our result was good considering the problems we faced”.
The GP2 Series now head to Bahrain for the penultimate round at the Sakhir International Circuit on 20-21 November.
