Sergio Canamasas pleased with strong recovery drives

The Barcelona-born driver, who started from the pitlane on Friday, regained several places both days to finish 10th and 12th. Canamasas delivered a strong drive with some amazing overtaking manoeuvres at the Monegasque urban track, the hardest circuit to pass on.

Sergio Canamasas was not able to repeat his success in Monaco. He had climbed onto the podium last two years. The pilot of Carlin headed to Monaco with ambitious goals and, despite he missed out the rostrum, Spaniard driver played a key role over the weekend and put on some of the greatest overtaking manoeuvres in the streets of Monaco.

On Thursday, Canamasas took 13th spot on the grid but, as he failed to stop at the scrutineering weighbridge during the session as a result of a puncture, the only Spanish driver in the series handed a penalty and started Friday´s feature race from the pitlane. Despite this, Canamasas passed several cars during the 40-lap race. After pitting early in the race and on his second set of tires, Sergio made his way up to 12th by overtaking drivers such as Gustav Malja or Sean Gelael. From row six on Saturday, Canamasas struggled on lap one as Daniel de Jong blocked him and dropped several places. But, later in the race, Spain´s driver passed Pierre Gasly, Malja and de Jong with two amazing moves at La Rascasse. After 30 laps, he finished 10th setting his personal fastest lap times at the end.

“Pit-lane penalty on Friday and a difficult first lap on Saturday weren´t the ideal start to both races. In race two, I could have moved up to 8th or 9th but de Jong blocked me and I lost several places. Among others, I was passed by Gasly. In general, I´m pleased with my performance under the circumstances, despite my goal was another podium finish. I passed several cars but starting from the pole position kills your chances”, Canamasas underlined. He adds that “we need to draw conclusions about the weekend, what works well and where we can improve. Of course, it´s time to have a little bit of rest, because they were stressing days!”
