Sergio Canamasas eyes poins in Spielberg
Following his brilliant recovery in Baku two weeks ago, when Canamasas brought sixth place home even after pitting on Sunday, Carlin driver predicts tough and tricky races at Red Bull Ring. The Austrian venue always produce close racing and lap times within a quite small time difference.
Sergio Canamasas prepares for four GP2 Series events spread over the weeks of July, for sure one of the most challenging months throughout his racing career. The Barcelona-born driver will contest events at Red Bull Ring, Silverstone, Hungaroring and Hockenheimring. The Red Bull Ring located in Spielberg kicks off the “summer season” and Spain´s driver of Carlin set point target again next weekend.
Canamasas made a good start to the season at his home round in Barcelona as he finished fifth on Saturday before heading into the second round in Monte Carlo. On the Monegasque streets, Canamasas took a top-ten finish on Sunday after putting in another brilliant recovery drive. But he delivered his best performance of the season so far in Baku. Sergio was forced to pit in Sunday´s sprint race but he still managed to climb up to sixth in only a few laps passing no less than ten cars. The Red Bull Ring has just nine corners (2 left, 7 right) and is 4.326km in length. The track has been resurfaced and it could become a massive challenge for soft and super-soft Pirelli tires.
“We are heading into the most crucial part of the season with four events in July. It shall be extremely demanding, in fact a kind of marathon. We need to keep a cool head in order to reach the end of this long distance challenge at Hockenheimring. Our short term goals are to achieve the best result possible every race, that´s key for Carlin and for me”, Canamasas explains and highlighting that “I think Austria is a good place to take another solid step forward. I feel optimistic. That said, margins are smaller than usual at the Red Bull Ring, so you need to pay attention to details if you want to succeed”.
Friday´s qualifying session will take place at 15.55. Feature race is scheduled on Saturday at 15.35 and sprint race on Sunday at 10.25.
