Spain´s driver got his goal to qualify in the top ten ruined as traffic made impossible to put the fastest sectors together during Friday´s GP2 Series qualifying session at Monza. Canamasas will start on ninth row tomorrow.

Traffic cost Sergio Canamasas a better result at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza and he couldn´t secure a top-ten finish as it was to be expected. Carlin driver Canamasas clocked a time of 1:33.341 in this morning´s free practice session. In the afternoon, during a traffic-hit qualifying session, Canamasas moved up to 11th on his first set of fresh tires. Unfortunately on his second set his lap time of 1:32.196 wasn´t good enough to improve 17th on the starting grid.

“Things went well on my first set of tires and 11th was a decent achievement. But then, suddenly, I experienced oversteer on my second set of tires and handling got much worse. Furthermore, I couldn´t put my best sector together because it is always rather difficult to have a clean lap at Monza. So, it ruined my best laps. My best ideal lap was 8th-fastest but, that´s racing. I don´t make excuses”, Canamasas explained after qualifying session came to an end. But he still remains committed to his goal: the top eight. He added that “passing others cars isn´t a major issue here. So, we need a good pit strategy and if I make a good race start, the top eight for Sunday´s reverse grid is within reach”.

Saturday´s feature race, with mandatory pit stop, is due to start tomorrow at 15.40.
