Julian van der Watt heads to Zwartkops with a spring in his step as he prepares for his mission of wresting a come-from-behind South African Formula 1600 championship on 26 November. Not only did the Camps Bay racer win last time out in Formula 1600 at Kyalami, but he also received the news just this week that he is, after all the 2016 Western Cape DD2 Karting champion.
Julian believed he had won the karting title following a dominant triple win in the WP karting finale a few weeks back, but an MSA edict erroneously cancelled the points of an earlier meeting instead of scoring the races on a lesser points pay-out, which slipped him to second and it took a week or two for that oversight to be corrected. But now van der Watt can celebrate his karting championship win as he prepares a his last-ditch effort to wrest that Formula 1600 crown too.
“We go into the final round of the Formula Ford championship on a high as we have won the DD2 regional karting championship. “It’s going to be a tough weekend at Zwartkops – we will need a bit of luck on our side if we want to win the championship. but in racing anything can happen.
“Dewald Brummer and I have had an almighty battle throughout the year and he takes the championship advantage into the final, but we still have a chance and I will keep on fighting to the end, so may the best man win! “I would like to thank my sponsors, Race Driver SA and Investchem for all the work they have put in this year and my dad for his never ending support.”
Formula Ford will race on a full national program at Zwartkops – it should prove a great day’s racing all-round.
