WP Karting Round 1 Report – Results for Julian despite tough task

Western Cape DD2 karting champion Julian van der Watt kicked off his title defence well in spite of a challenging day at Killarney’s season opener on Saturday.

“I actually had a very good weekend, all considered,” Julian pointed out after ending second overall following a pair of seconds and a third place in the three races on the day.

“Our race engine did not make it in time for the races after a freight strike in Durban, so we had to borrow Jonathan Thomas’s spare engine for the day – so a huge word of thanks to Jono that we could even race. “That meant that I was a little down on power and I never had the pace to match Upie Swart this weekend and I had to watch him disappear in front.

“Unfortunately for Jonathan, he had a difficult weekend, so I was able to beat him to second twice and follow him home in to third in the second race, but I’ll take those podiums with both hands, thank you very much!

“We will be back up to speed for the next race though,” Julian concluded. “So I’m looking forward to racing for wins again on 11 March.”
