R01 Melbourne – FIA Formula 2 Race 2 Report – Extreme weather prompts feature race cancellation at Albert Park

Treacherous weather conditions led to the cancellation of today’s FIA Formula 2 feature race in Melbourne amid multiple start attempts and a deteriorating situation.

Due to dangerous standing water and heavy aquaplaning, the stewards had to throw red flags twice and eventually call the race off on safety grounds.

No points were awarded. PREMA, Gabriele Minì, and Sebastian Montoya will be back on track on the 12th and 13th of April at Bahrain International Circuit.

#9 SEBASTIAN MONTOYA
“It was very wet and it was just getting worse and worse. The first time I went out, I couldn’t really see anything. After the red flag, the rain stopped and for a second, I thought we were going to race. But then we did the formation lap and it was worse than before. The second formation lap was better, but then the third was the worst one. At this point, it was impossible to go full throttle in the straights and really easy to go off. At least I was able to drive on the rain tyres and understand the procedures, warming the brakes and tyres. Everything is a learning experience and it was quite positive.”

#10 GABRIELE MINÌ
“Not much happened really, every time we were going on track, it was too dangerous. First of all, we could not see where we were going and I could barely see the red light of the car in front. Then it was the aquaplaning and the water it was really difficult to stay on the track even in third gear on the straight, it was pulling you left and right. I think it was the right choice even if we were quick all weekend. It would have been nice to try and see how the race would evolve on the wet. Starting a bit on the back in the sprint race means we only got a few points, which is a bit of a shame, but it’s better than zero. It was a good weekend speed-wise in qualy and in the race so we can be quite happy.”

Le condizioni meteorologiche insidiose hanno portato alla cancellazione dell’odierna gara FIA di Formula 2 a Melbourne in mezzo a molteplici tentativi di partenza e a un deterioramento della situazione.

A causa delle pericolose acque stagnanti e del pesante aquaplaning, gli steward hanno dovuto lanciare due volte bandiere rosse e alla fine annullare la gara per motivi di sicurezza.

Non sono stati assegnati punti. PREMA, Gabriele Minì, e Sebastian Montoya torneranno in pista il 12 e 13 aprile al Bahrain International Circuit.

#9 SEBASTIAN MONTOYA
“Era molto bagnato e stava sempre peggio. La prima volta che sono uscito, non riuscivo davvero a vedere nulla. Dopo la bandiera rossa, la pioggia si è fermata e per un secondo, ho pensato che avremmo corso. Ma poi abbiamo fatto il giro di formazione ed è stato peggio di prima. Meglio il secondo giro di formazione, ma poi il terzo è stato il peggiore. A questo punto era impossibile andare a tutto gas nei rettilinei ed era davvero facile partire. Almeno ho potuto guidare con le gomme da pioggia e capire le procedure, riscaldando freni e gomme. Tutto è un’esperienza di apprendimento ed è stata piuttosto positiva.”

#10 GABRIELE MINÌ
“Non succedeva molto in realtà, ogni volta che andavamo in pista, era troppo pericoloso. Prima di tutto, non riuscivamo a vedere dove stavamo andando e riuscivo a malapena a vedere la luce rossa della macchina davanti. Poi era l’aquaplaning e l’acqua era davvero difficile rimanere in pista anche in terza marcia sul rettilineo, ti tirava a destra e a sinistra. Penso che sia stata la scelta giusta anche se siamo stati veloci per tutto il weekend. Sarebbe stato bello provare a vedere come si sarebbe evoluta la gara sul bagnato. Partire un pò sul retro nella gara sprint significa che abbiamo ottenuto solo pochi punti, il che è un pò un peccato, ma è meglio di zero. È stato un buon fine settimana in termini di velocità nelle qualifiche e in gara, quindi possiamo essere abbastanza felici.”
